Het hoesje van 'The musician' spreekt boekdelen. Naakt zit Jennifer Terran achter haar piano. Om te symboliseren hoe bloot ze zich geeft op haar derde, onlangs uitgekomen album. Terran is een muzikante die opereert met ziel en zaligheid. Op een zeer aansprekende cd. De komende tijd is de Californische zangeres en pianiste in Nederland om met haar partner Brendan Statom (bas) een aantal concerten te geven. Op 6 november treedt ze op in het Burgerweeshuis in Deventer.

Van Jennifer Terran hoor je intieme zaken als je haar vraagt waarom haar eerste album uit 1997 'Cruel' heet. Ook al zegt ze erbij dat het haar moeilijk valt om over muziek te praten. Op 'Cruel' ventileerde ze zeer persoonlijke dingen, die onder meer te maken hebben met de dood van haar moeder toen Terran dertien jaar was. Het leven kan soms zeer wreed zijn.

'Mijn moeder staat trouwens op het hoesje afgebeeld. Als je over dergelijke zaken zingt, stel je je kwetsbaar op. Het is gemakkelijk om te doen, omdat je jezelf bent. Op deze manier is het niet moeilijk om de waarheid te spreken.'

METAFOOR

De hoesfoto is volgens Terran een metafoor. 'Iedereen, niet alleen een muzikant, moet alles geven als hij iets doet. Ik kijk trouwens niet in de camera, wel naar de piano. Mijn lichaam weerspiegelt zich in de piano. Muziek is een spiegel, die mij laat zien wie ik ben. Ik ben weliswaar kwetsbaar, maar ik heb controle over wat van belang is, mijn zelfexpressie.''

Fans van expressieve muzikanten als Tori Amos en Sinéad O'Connor kunnen veel plezier beleven aan 'The musician', het meest ambitieuze album van Terran. De Amerikaanse singer/songwriter voelt zich verwant met uiteenlopende muzikanten. Met jazzmuzikant Pat Metheney en de ondefineerbare Tom Waits bijvoorbeeld.

'Het zijn mensen die muziek op de eerste plaats zetten en niet uit zijn op oppervlakkige roem. Het zijn geen types die de adoratie van twaalf miljoen fans nodig hebben. Want ze zijn met hart en ziel bezig. Ze zijn wie ze zijn, uniek.'

Terran stopt veel ruimte in de composities van 'The musician', ook veel strijkers. 'Ik hou van ruimte en minimalisme. Als je uitgaat van een dergelijke aanpak, dan krijg je muziek waarin je de instrumenten afzonderlijk goed kunt horen. Ik hou ook van dissonanten. Het schudt mensen wakker. Wendingen die mensen niet verwachten, vergroten de spanning en leveren de meest efficiente resultaten op.'

SCHOONHEID

The musician gaat over de strijd die een muzikant moet leveren, de cd gaat ook over de schoonheid die hij nastreeft. Dit concept kent diverse lagen. Terugkerend personage is Mad Magdaline, die met haar pistool de strijd aangaat met een employee van een platenmaatschappij. Dat pistool is het symbool voor haar streven naar vrijheid. Als muzikante wil Mad Magdaline niet gebonden zijn aan de grillen van een bobo van een platenlabel die alleen uit is op snel Top 40-succes.'

Terran: 'Een onafhankelijke positie is zeer gezond. Daarom heb ik ook een eigen platenmaatschappij. Ik heb die opgericht omdat ik een eigen plek nodig had voor mijn creativiteit.'

Terran weet zich op haar komende tournee vergezeld door Brendan Statom. Met hem speelt ze al elf jaar samen. Het duo zit inmiddels alweer in een nieuwe fase.

Terran: 'The musician' is een heel compleet album, in velerlei opzicht. In elk lied heb ik de beste keuzes gemaakt, elk detail klopt. Maar we zijn sinds de opname gegroeid. Wij zijn altijd op zoek naar de beste manier waarop we ons kunnen uitdrukken. Mijn nieuwe album zal nog volwassener klinken en is wat de ritmische aanpak betreft meer ontwikkeld. Maar ook die plaat zal de muzikant tonen die ik ben.'

The cover of 'The Musician' speaks in volumes. Jennifer Terran sits naked behind her piano. To symbolize how she gives herself on her third, recently released album. Terran is a musician that operates with her heart and soul. It's a very touching cd. In the upcoming period the Califonian singer and pianist will be in The Netherlands together with her partner Brendan Statom (double bass) for a couple of concerts. On the 6th of November she will appear in the Burgerweeshuis in Deventer.

From Jennifer Terran you can hear intimate issues when you ask her why her first album from 1998 is called 'Cruel'. Although she says that it is difficult for her to talk about music. On 'Cruel' she ventilates very personel stuff, more or less related to the death of her mother when Terran was only thirteen years old. Live can sometimes be very cruel indeed.

"My mother is actually pictured on the cover. If you sing about these kind of issues, you are in a very vulnerable situation. But it is easy to do, because you are yourself. In this way it is not too difficult to speak the truth."

METAPHOR.

The cover is according to Terran a metaphor. 'Everybody, not just musicians, must give everything if you do something. Actually I am not looking into the camera, but I am looking at the piano. My body is reflected into the piano. Music is like a mirror, it shows me who I am. I am actually vulnerable, but I have control over what is important to me, my self expression."

Fans of the expressive musicians like Tori Amos or Sinéad O'Conner can get a lot of pleasure from 'The Musician', the most ambitious album from Terran. The American singer/songwriter feels connected with a great diversity of musicians. With jazz musicians like Pat Metheney and the undefinable Tom Waits for example.

'These are people who put music first place and are not looking for easy fame. These are not the types who need the adoration of twelve million people. It's because they are doing their stuff with their heart and soul.
They are who they are, unique."

Terran gets a lot of space into the compositions of 'The Musician', also a lot of violins. 'I love space and minimalism. If you start form such a situation, you'll get music where you can hear every instrument separately. Changes that listeners do not expect increase the tention and it gets the most efficient results.

BEAUTY.

The Musician is about the struggle a musician has to deliver, the cd is also about the beauty that she wants to achieve. This concept knows several diverse layers. The recurring personality is Mad Magdaline, armed with a gun in her hand starts the battle against an employee of a record company. That gun is symbol of the struggle for freedom. As a musician Mad Magdaline does not want to be attached (or be dependant of) the grills of a record company bozo who only wants fast Top 40 success.

Terran :"An independent position is very healthy. That's why I have my own record company. I started this as to create a free space for my creativity."

Terran is accompanied on this tour by Brendan Statom. With him she performs together already for eleven years. This duo is actually again into another fase.

Terran :"'The musician' is a complete album, in many different ways. In every song I had to make what I felt were the right choices, with every detail a choice in integrity. But since the making of the record, I have of course been growing. So the next album will be even more realized in terms of my growth, my potential."
