Jennifer Terran Live in Leiden

Zaterdagnacht, half vier. Het is al uren tijd om te gaan slapen maar voordat ik mijn ogen sluit wil ik jullie nog even vertellen over het live-concert van de charmante en getalenteerde Jennifer Terran en haar man de muzikaal verbijsterende Brendan Statom.

Mijn eerste kennismaking met Jennifer was bij de hoofdredacteur van Heaven thuis. Hij liet mij haar cd The Musician horen die op dat moment alleen te bestellen was via haar website www.jenniferterran.com. Op The Musician gaat Jennifer als een kruising tussen Tori Amos en Alanis Morissette te keer tegen de platenmaatschappijen die artiesten vertellen dat hun stijl niet commercieel genoeg is.

Mad Magdaline - The Musician

Net als de hoofdpersoon Magdaline die haar revenge haalt door een Executive neer te schieten ter bescherming van de algemene smaak (there's more music than what you hear on the fucking radio you ignorant bastard!) neemt Jennifer het heft in eigen handen door een studio in haar achtertuin te bouwen en haar derde album geheel zelf op te nemen. Het resultaat werd door Heaven terecht 'één van de mooiste albums van 2001' genoemd.

De reacties uit Nederland waren zo positief dat Jennifer een aantal weken geleden besloot hier naar toe te komen voor een paar optredens. De Strange & Wonderful Happenings in Holland tour was geboren.

"The "STRANGE & WONDERFUL HAPPENINGS" are concerts that will take place in inspiring and totally unique public places. These performances will be unamplified, raw, real, improvisational, exciting and totally true to the moment!!"

Puur, dat was het concert in één woord. Geen setlist, geen decor, alleen een fragiele dame met een dijk van stem achter de piano en haar man die naast haar de contrabas tot leven bracht. Tussen de intense nummers door, babbelde Jennifer met haar publiek over haar belevenissen in Nederland. Geen obligate 'I love Holland' maar echte gesprekken met de kleine vijftig man die speciaal voor haar en haar man Brendan naar Leiden waren getogen.

De nummers kwamen van alledrie haar cd's en werden aangevuld met een paar prachtige nieuwe songs. En als ze een daverend applaus kreeg na de zoveelste doorleefde vertelling op muziek, dan werd deze verdubbeld als ze naar haar man keek. Nooit geweten dat je zoveel prachtige tonen uit een contrabas kon halen. Wat die man met dat instrument presteerde. Soms leek het alsof hij klassiek, jazz en blues in één nummer uit het instrument wrong. De diepe klanken contrasteerden prachtig met de hoge stem van Jennifer Terran en de ijle klanken van haar piano. En telkens als de intensiteit het publiek teveel leek te worden, draaide Jennifer zich met een glimlach naar ons toe en begon een verhaal te vertellen over de aankoop van haar jas, de verhuizing van haar appartement (waar ze geen seks mocht hebben van de hospita, omdat ze niet getrouwd was) of de hond met drie poten waar zijn baas zich voor schaamde.

The Painter - The Musician

Jennifer en haar man geven nog een aantal concerten in Nederland voordat ze weer naar de States vertrekken. Ik raad iedereen aan die van mooie intense vrouwenpop houdt, om naar één van deze juweeltjes te gaan, of naar één van de mini-concerten op de radio te luisteren. Ik beloof je dat je een show krijgt te zien die niets te maken heeft met de massale evenementen die zich gewoonlijk in de Nederlandse zalen afspelen. En het is nog goedkoper ook.

Jennifer Terran Live in Leiden
(English Translation)

Saturday night, half past three. It has been hours past bedtime, but before I close my eyes and lay myself in Morpheus arms, I have to tell you about the concert I just saw by the charming and talented Jennifer Terran and her amazing musician-husband Brendan Statom.

My first time encounter with Jennifer was when I was visiting the editor of Heaven (www.heaven.be) He played her album The Musician, that, at that time, could only be bought on her website www.jenniferterran.com. On the album, where she sometimes sounded like an angry cross between Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette, she attacked the record companies who tell artists that they are not commercial enough.

"What about the Tom Waits'?" she said.

Mad Magdaline - The Musician

Just like her character Magdaline, who gets her revenge by shooting an executive in order to protect great music (there's more music than what you hear on the fucking radio you ignorant bastard!) Jennifer gets her own way by building her own studio in the back of her garden and by recording her third album her own way. The result was reviewed by Heaven as one of the best albums of 2001, and rightly so.

Reactions from Holland were that positive that Jennifer decided to visit us for a few gigs. The Strange & Wonderful Happenings in Holland tour was born.

Pure, that was this concert in one word. No setlist, no décor, only a small lady, with a voice like a storm, behind the piano and her husband next to her, bringing his bass to live. Like the in-between-songs on her albums, she talked about her experiences in Holland in between songs. No 'I love Hollands', but real conversations with the fifty+ people who went to Leiden just to see her play.

She played songs from all her three albums with some new songs as a bonus. En every time the applause followed the songs, it went up when she pointed at her husband. I've never known you could all this with a bass! What this guy could magic out of his instrument was so amazing. It seemed like he forced jazz, blues and classical music out of it, sometimes at the same time. His deep sounds made a great contrast with the beautiful high voice of Jennifer Terran.

Every time it seemed the concert became too intense, Jennifer smiled at us and told stories of badly bought coats, moving from an apartment where they were not allowed to have sex and of a dog with three legs.

The Painter - The Musician

Jennifer and her husband are coming back to Holland this autumn and I advice anyone who l loves beautiful music by women to go to one of the concerts. I'll promise you a show that has nothing to do with the massive concerts you usually see in Dutch concert halls. And it's cheaper too!
